Meta owned, WhatsApp is apparently exploring the ability for customers to move chats from an Android handset to an iPhone. It is trying to make it easier than ever to transfer chat history from Android to iPhones as there was not a feature to do that before. For android users who wished to switch to iPhones, the lack of this feature was always a huge problem.
The app began transferring chats from iOS to Android phones last year, starting with Samsung devices. WhatsApp later introduced support for Google Pixel phones as well as other Android 12 devices. Even after introducing it on some phones, there was never a way to transfer them from Android phones to iPhones.
Recently, there has been a development in such area. There has been a talk that the transfer of WhatsApp chats from an Android to an iPhone will soon be available.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is developing an “import chat history” function that would allow Android users to transfer their conversations to their iPhones. It is currently inaccessible to the wider population. But for the feature to work, it appears that you’ll need an additional application known as Move to iOS. For the chat migration to take place, you’ll need to keep your phone unlocked and the app open at all times. The function does not operate in the beta version. This is because the Move to iOS app is not yet available and we don’t know when it will be.
Some screenshots have come into notice which says that before transferring the chat history from Android to iOS, WhatsApp will ask for permission in its iOS app. It might say “We need permission to restore your chats. You will not be able to import later if you skip this step.”
A step towards an easier way:
This new feature is a move in the right direction. It will allow users who are considering a switch to avoid third-party apps that could compromise their privacy, have a hassle-free update for the recovery of their chat history. You’ll have to rely on third-party services to transport your WhatsApp data from Android to iPhone and iPhone to Android until the new update is available.
Even if you’re using the most recent WhatsApp for the iOS build, you won’t be able to transfer the chat history. That’s because right now it is hidden by default. In the following weeks, we should anticipate WhatsApp to make the feature available to beta testers.
However, no information on the operating system versions or devices that will be supported by this planned functionality has been released. There is also no word about availability. Even so, given that WhatsApp has already handed out the ability to migrate chats from iOS to Android, it won’t be strange to see this feature arrive sooner rather than later.
