MediaTek Kompanio 1380 processor announced: What’s New?

There’s a new MediaTek Kompanio 1380 processor in its range of Chromebook chipsets. The chip company, which presently maintains a strong position in the cheap market for both phones and Chromebooks, has developed a high-end chipset for “luxury Chromebooks” that will be available in the second half of this year. According to the business, the new chip would provide outstanding performance while consuming less power than its predecessor.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 513 will be the first laptop to use this processor, which was announced at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Because it lacks a dedicated 5G modem, the Mediatek Kompanio 1380 chipset has specs that are identical to those of the Mediatek Kompanio 1300T chipset. However, it is not 5G capable. It is an octa-core CPU that is manufactured using TSMC’s 6nm manufacturing technology.

The new MediaTek Kompanio 1380 is equipped with four ARM Cortex-A78 performance cores that can operate at speeds of up to 3GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 efficiency cores that can operate at speeds of up to 2GHz. There is an ARM Mali-G57 GPU for graphics-intensive tasks, which is a drop from the Mali-G77 MC9 GPU found in the MediaTek Kompanio 1300T. eMMC, UFS 3.1, and NVMe storage are all supported, and up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM may be used to power the system.

The chip has the capability of powering up to two 4K screens at refresh rates of 30Hz or 60Hz. With a single monitor, the chipset is capable of supporting up to 4K resolution at a refresh rate of 60Hz. A dedicated audio digital signal processor (DSP) with a voice on wakeup (VoW) capabilities is also included, as is support for AV1 hardware decoding. There is also support for AV2 hardware decoding.

In addition, there is a MediaTek APU 3.0 multi-core AI processor, which the firm claims will enhance battery life while also speeding up AI camera and AI voice apps, according to the business. While it does not offer 5G connectivity, it does support Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, which allows for quick and reliable connections.

“MediaTek Kompanio 1380 processor continues MediaTek’s legacy as the No. 1 chipmaker for Arm-based Chromebooks, elevating the premium Chromebook experience with next-level performance and extra-long battery life,” said C Tseng, general manager of MediaTek’s Intelligent Multimedia Business Unit, in a statement announcing the processor’s launch.

“Exceptional processing performance, best-in-class multimedia and artificial intelligence capabilities, as well as seamless cloud gaming capabilities, all of which are incorporated into an ultra-efficient 6nm semiconductor, distinguish this chip.”

As previously announced, Acer will begin shipping the newest Chromebook Spin 513 gadget in the next months, according to a company spokesperson. It will be offered in a limited number of areas, with the first release scheduled for June 2022 in North America. It is presently uncertain whether an Acer Chromebook or a laptop powered by the Kompanio 1380 processor will be available in India.
